Happy birthday to me!! My husband got me a full one-year subscription to Birchbox; monthly deliveries of lifestyle and beauty samples tailored just for me based on a profile my hubby filled out about me. He knows me so well 😉
I secretly coveted a beauty subscription box and without having to say it out loud, he knew 🙂
Since I will be receiving one of these bad boys every month I decided to share the experience. Each month I will feature the theme and products, express my first impressions, and provide a follow up review after using the products for an entire month on the following post.
For my first box I have the pleasure of receiving the exclusive box collection created in collaboration with Nicole Richie. She is the Birchbox Queen of the Month and as a very busy woman herself she “curated a box fit for the boss lady in all of us.” (Nicole Richie)
Meant to mimic a professional microdermabrasion treatment from the comfort of your own home and a fraction of the cost. Recommended for use 1-2 times a week by gently massaging a small amount to clean, damp skin and rinsing with water.
I have dry and very sensitive skin so I did a patch test on my jaw line and waited 24 hours to watch for a reaction. Unfortunately, my skin broke out so I am not able to use the product, however my husband will be testing it out since his skin is the opposite of mine; oily and can withstand most products.
He has clear skin for the most part and mainly is trying to work on getting rid of blackheads. Many claim regular exfoliation, such as microdermabrasion, helps reduce blackheads amongst other things so we will see what happens.
The creamy crayon can be used as a lip and cheek tint. Due to the fact that it is a tint, I did not find it to be as moisturizing for my lips and it highlighted fine lines and chapped areas. I would definitely exfoliate the lips before using this.
As for the cheeks, because it is such a bright color I would use it sparingly if you are as fair-skinned as I am. I dotted the apples of my cheeks and then gently blended the color in, but I think I used it way too sparingly because the color does not show up in the pics at all!
I love this color! Definitely, a color I could wear any time of the year. Classy and dazzling and suitable for all ages and occasions. I’ll be testing its staying power since most nail polishes tend to chip on me after a few days.
The product is a hair smoothing fluid to tame frizz and flyways and protects hair during heat styling. The instructions state to apply on damp hair and then blow dry. I do not blow dry my hair so I decided to test it out as is after I washed my hair.
I did not notice a significant difference in my regular frizz and flyways and it left a slightly oily residue.
*FYI: I have normal to dry, wavy, virgin (never been dyed) hair that I rarely ever heat style.
I decided to use a flat iron to test the claimed heating protection and I was pleasantly surprised! I only had to pass the flat iron once through each section of hair and the oily residue turned to moisture and shine. I liked this product much better after heat styling and I prefer the results over the TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray I use on special occasions.
Next time, I will try blow-drying my hair after applying the product as instructed to see the results.
- St Tropez Gradual In-Shower Tan
This one is interesting…a self-tanning lotion you use in the shower. There is a trick to it though; you apply it on clean, damp skin in circular motions while the shower is off and you wait 3 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water only. You do have to rinse your palms after application and before the 3 minute wait. The color is supposed to show up gradually with continued use.
Love the idea of not leaving a mess or stains of self-tanner on the floor or on your clothes and it does not leave a strong smell on your skin after you are done.
I have tried self-tanners in the past and they were a disaster! For fair-skinned women like me self-tanners make you look jaundiced. But I have heard great things about the St. Tropez brand and how it is the “best self-tanner for fair skin”.
I took a before and after photo (taken the following day) to document any differences.
I will continue to use the product on a daily basis and document the results to share later on.
It was fun trying out all these products that I most likely would not go and get myself. I might just repurchase some of them, too.
Beauty products do not define true beauty and are simply an accessory. Beauty radiates from within!
